Jim Moray

Well we don’t think Jim Moray actually plays a bow and arrow, but he is very innovative, so who knows!

This will be the third time we have welcomed Jim to the Goose – he’s a definite favourite.  Last time was in the – let’s say interesting – room upstairs at the Dog, aka The Crown and Greyhound in Dulwich Village. Whether the massive bronze turkey was in the room at the same time ( part of an art exhibition – a large part), we can’t remember. At least at the lovely Ivy House we won’t have to squeeze past said massive bronze turkey to get to the ticket table. But I digress.

Jim is one of those people whose music  defies categorisation, really. Whilst staying true to the roots of the folk tradition, he brings in all sorts of other elements to make them of our times. There is a great description on his website, which really should be read by all those people (and there sometimes seem to be many of them if  Facebook is to be believed)  who think that folk music should never move on  and that to change the way a song is sung or interpreted is total sacrilege. GRRRRRRR is all we have to say to that. Well, not all,  we have a lot to say, but it’s all we will say here.

Here is a quote from Jim’s website about Upcetera, his latest album :

“Drawing influence from the systems music of composers like Nyman and Reich (another of his formative passions) Upcetera features dramatically orchestrated Child ballads reimagined as torch songs or a kind of English Fado. It’s an album that places the narrative element of these songs centre stage, with Jim Moray’s supple soaring vocal leading the listener by the hand through strange old stories.

Making them new.”

Jim’s great! Do come! And we have two absolutely brilliant support acts tonight, too!

Counter’s Creek    is an acoustic folk trio based in London who make original music inspired by the folk music of the British Isles and beyond. Expect to hear jigs, reels, grooves from Eastern Europe & West Africa, catchy melodies with closely interwoven harmonies allied to a real sense of swing and dance energy. As soon as we heard them, we wanted to book them, and – well, we did! And you can see them tonight!

The Norfolk Broads

We first heard The Norfolk Broads  (brilliant name, guys!) when they came along to one of our Singarounds, and we saw them singing on the South Bank on what must have been the wettest day of the year ….. but hey it was worth getting wet, they were excellent. As you will hear tonight!
