The possibly indescribable (but hey let’s try) and certainly uncategorizable John Otway returns to the Goose – and The Ivy House – this time accompanied by Wild Willy Barrett.
Expect an evening of madness and mayhem! And music!
A manic presence, and a true “one-off”, John first became notorious back in 1977 after an appearance on the Old Grey Whistle Test with (his then former partner) Wild Willy Barrett.
He had leapt astride Wild Willy’s amplifier, and lost his footing. One leg slipped on one side of the sturdy wooden piece of musical equipment, and the other leg down the other. The whole weight of Otway’s body crashed down on the most delicate parts of his body.
This sort of behaviour went down exceedingly well with the punk audiences of the time, and Otway was rewarded with his first hit “Cor Baby, That’s Really Free”, a recording contract worth a million in today’s money, and a sizeable live audience.
It took a little while, but a quarter of a century after that first record, John Otway was in the Top Ten again with “Bunsen Burner”, promoting him in a stroke to the hallowed pantheon of “two hit wonders.”
A follow-up autobiography was penned in 2010, titled: I Did It Otway: Regrets I’ve Had a Few.
In 2012, Otway produced his debut movie titled Otway the Movie: The Story of Rock n Roll’s Greatest Failure – subsequently voted the 2nd best film of the year in a Guardian readers’ poll.
Four years later, Otway took his band to the Caribbean island of Montserrat, the first international recording artist to record there since the Stones in 1989.
Montserrat is the first album of entirely new and original Otway material in over ten years.
Anyway, to add to this overabundance of excellence, Andy Twyman is possibly the best One Man Band you will ever see. He has a chicken. Oh, and he plays excellent blues!
There is a booking fee for tickets bought online. However, please note that (as of 18 January) we have just taken tickets off sale at The Ivy House in order to avoid overselling and exceeding the room capacity. Therefore, if you want to come but do not yet have tickets, you will need to buy them via the link above.
ALSO please note that the format of this concert will be different from usual! Andy Twyman will be opening with a set and John and Willy will then do two sets back to back (with a break in the middle).
