You Are Wolf is local girl Kerry Andrews, who performs looped versions of traditional songs with a few originals thrown in.
She is one of those people who we just can’t understand how we’ve never come across her before, grammar.
We were blown away by her demo CD, and even more blown away when we saw her performing live for the first time at the Dog supporting Alasdair Roberts, even though she had to compete for attention with the massive bronze turkey on sale for thirty thousand pounds (it disappeared by the time of the next Goose concert!)
We think they sold it, folks. Words like some, people, more, money and sense spring to mind. But I digress …..)
If you saw her then, you will be back whenever we have her back! If you didn’t, come and see what you have been missing. We promise you won’t be disappointed – she is absolutely brilliant and unique, with a very special talent.
Here’s the official blurb – nicked straight from her website …….
‘The delivery is in the style of a beat poet lost in the renaissance period with no possessions and a distant memory of hearing Bjork’s ‘Medulla’… The depth of the imagery You Are Wolf conjures up is magical and macabre, it is a joy to get absorbed in the eerie storytelling… ‘Hunting Little Songs’ is totally compelling, an absolute gem for listeners feeling jaded and world weary, it will feel like an invigorating breath of fresh air’ – The Ear Horn
You Are Wolf explores English and American folk and original leftfield pop with gentle touches of electronica, weaves in spoken word and throws in an array of wild vocal techniques. She has been played on BBC 6Music by Tom Robinson, Gideon Coe and Stuart Maconie, Radio 3’s Late Junction and New York’s premier indie radio station WFUV.
She has appeared twice on Radio 3’s The Verb, including a specially-commissioned new song for the show. She was picked as an EDFSS/The Magpie’s Nest Folk Rising artist in 2010, and has played at Union Chapel, Cambridge Folk Festival, The Vortex and the Queen Elizabeth Hall.
You Are Wolf was awarded a grant from the PRS Foundation for Music’s Women Make Music scheme, and is currently performing her new set of songs based around British birds in folklore, ‘birdlore: murders, charms and murmurations’.
She has supported Martin Carthy, Alasdair Roberts and Laura J Martin. Her debut EP, ‘hunting little songs’ (Mulberry House) was released in 2011, and her debut album ‘Hawk to the Hunting Gone’, produced by Camille producer MaJiKer, will be released at the end of the year! (That was 2013 – The Goose)
‘Unfeasibly wonderful’ – BBC Radio 3
‘I’m so excited about this EP… I haven’t heard anything like this in a long, long time’ – BBC 6 Music
‘Mesmerising modern digital folk… London-based Kerry Andrew makes the most inventive use of her box of tricks, looping miniature swarms of vocal clicks, chirrups, purrs, whistle, tuts and even the odd dog bark, which flutter and fizz around her gorgeously pure voice like musical fireflies…a spellbinding talent’ – Nightshift (Oxford music mag)
‘Inventive, creepy, gorgeous’ – The Other Woman, Resonance FM
‘With the innocence of Camille and the rawness and purity of Regina Spektor’ – remotegoat.co.uk
“Hunting Little Songs’ is an innovative journey through leftfield folk, taking stops in beat-generation fuelled lyricism and menacing composition’ – shout4music.com
‘Distinctive, ambitious music… dense, sinister little packages (that) echo the experimental Finnish folkstress Islaja and The Marble Index, and the sepulchral solo work by ex-Velvet Underground muse Nico.’ – Contact Music
Elsewhere, as Kerry Andrew, You Are Wolf is a composer of experimental vocal music and choral music, as well a performer with adventurous a cappella trio Juice, punky jazz crew DOLLYman and folkjazz sextet Metamorphic.
